French Naval vessels berth in Khorfakkan during goodwill visit

Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT), one of the world's leading container transhipment ports, operated by Sharjah-based international ports and logistics group Gulftainer on behalf of the Sharjah Ports Authority, recently welcomed some unusual guests – two French naval vessels. The French aircraft carrier ‘FNS Charles de Gaulle’ and frigate ‘FNS Tourville’ berthed at KCT – which is usually concerned exclusively with container shipping – as part of a goodwill visit to the UAE.

New VP Business Development at Port Metro Vancouver

Metro Ports, a holding of Nautilus International Holding Corp., recently announced the promotion of Brian Johnson to vice president of business development from director of strategic analysis and contracts. In his new position, Johnson will focus mainly on the U.S. West Coast, playing a key leadership role in identifying new business development opportunities, ranging from individual accounts to mergers & acquisitions; marketing various Nautilus companies to facilitate effective operating solutions for customers’ needs; executing new business transactions; and maintaining client relationships.

December good month for Houston

Chief Executive Officer Alec G. Dreyer reported to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority at its January 25 meeting that December was a good month for the Port Authority in steel and containers, with improvements in other cargo categories as well. The Port Authority handled 249,000 tons of steel in December 2010 — reflecting an increase of 174 percent over December 2009. “For the year, steel finished 2 percent above the 2009 level based upon strong growth in the last nine months of 2010,” Dreyer said. “At present, we expect a 13-to-14 percent increase in steel volumes in 2011 over 2010, with the annual level approaching 3.1 million tons.”

Konecranes’ third RTG delivery to Mexican terminal

In November 2010 Konecranes received an order for three RTG (rubber tired gantry) cranes from Altamira Terminal Portuario (ATP Altamira) in Mexico. When these recently ordered cranes have been delivered, it will be Konecranes' third RTG delivery to ATP Altamira and will have nine Konecranes RTGs in their fleet.

Unrest in Egypt does not affect transits at Suez Canal

Due to the ongoing unrest in urban areas around the country a maritime security alert has been issued for Egypt. The Suez Canal has not been affected and transits are proceeding as normal with no delays or schedule alterations.

Cargotec to acquire US based terminal operator systems provider Navis

Cargotec has entered into an agreement to acquire terminal operator systems (TOS) provider Navis from Zebra Technologies Corporation in the United States. The transaction value is approximately USD 190 million (approximately EUR 140 million). By acquiring the leading TOS provider Navis, Cargotec will further strengthen its ability to provide total solutions for its terminal customers.
