The Port of Montreal recently hosted a massive logistics operation. On August 31 at the MGT-operated Cast Terminal, six steel beams were loaded onto the CMA CGM Aristote, which runs on the new CAGEMA service connecting the Port of Montreal to South America.
Bound for a major mining project in Georgetown, Guyana, the components were almost 19 metres long and weighed a total of about 34 tonnes. Manufactured in Quebec, they were shipped and transported as breakbulk cargo on nine flat rack containers, specially designed to accommodate out-of-gauge cargo.

This operation highlights the many opportunities now available to Quebec businesses to import and export all types of goods to international markets, including oversized loads.
With the CAGEMA service, businesses can now make the most of a dedicated route for moving specialised cargo between Montreal and Latin America, combined with CMA CGM’s expertise in managing oversized cargo.
“This operation is solid proof of how the connectivity provided by the Port of Montreal opens up new opportunities for Quebec businesses. By mobilising the entire supply chain, even the most complex cargoes can efficiently access international markets,” said Paul Bird, President and CEO of the Port of Montreal.
Handling these imposing beams called for thorough planning and close coordination among the various partners, including the teams from the Port of Montreal, CMA CGM, and MGTP. This shipment marks the first phase of a larger-scale logistics project. Other industrial equipment and structural components for the same project will be shipped in the next few weeks.
