The Port of New York and New Jersey processed 688,163 TEUs in April 2026, a dip of 8.4 percent from 751,194 TEUs in the same month last year.
This comes after a solid March, when the port became the busiest cargo gateway in the US by volume. April throughput represented 377,105 containers, compared with 413,896 containers in April 2025.

For the first four months of 2026, total volume reached 2.86 million TEUs, or 1.56 million containers. This marked a 3 percent decrease compared with the same period in 2025.
Loaded imports totalled 340,365 TEUs in April, down 12 percent from 386,727 TEUs in April 2025. From January to April, loaded imports reached 1.43 million TEUs, a 4.3 percent decrease compared with 1.50 million TEUs in the same period last year.
Loaded exports were broadly stable, falling 0.4 percent in April to 121,258 TEUs, compared with 121,770 TEUs in April 2025. Over the first four months of the year, loaded exports rose 2.7 percent to 475,438 TEUs, up from 462,777 TEUs in the corresponding period of 2025.
Export empties declined 6.7 percent year-on-year in April, reaching 225,182 TEUs compared with 241,289 TEUs in April 2025. From January to April, export empties totalled 944,750 TEUs, down 3.8 percent from 982,372 TEUs recorded in the same period last year.
Import empties increased 6.4 percent in the first four months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
Rail volume also decreased in April, falling 8.5 percent year-on-year to 54,538 containers. However, rail volumes for January through April were 2.4 percent higher than in the same period of 2025.
A total of 28,013 autos moved through the port in April, down 7 percent from April 2025. Auto volume for the first four months of the year was 8.2 percent lower than in the same period last year.
