The Colombo East Container Terminal, operated by Sri Lanka Ports Authority, has commissioned its third berth, increasing total berth length to 1,096 meters and marking a significant operational milestone in operations. In 2025, Colombo East Container Terminal handled more than 500,000 TEUs despite operating with incomplete infrastructure for part of the year. With the third berth now fully operational, throughput volumes are expected to accelerate further in 2026, as expanded berth capacity enables to accommodate more vessel calls and improve container handling efficiency.
The additional berth is also expected to ease congestion across the port, enhance terminal productivity and reduce vessel turnaround times, strengthening Colombo’s competitiveness as a regional trans-shipment hub and container shipping gateway.
