The Port of Oakland has moved closer to clean shore power with February 2011 approval -- from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD; Air District) -- of $5 million from the Mobile Source Incentive Fund (MSIF) for the Port of Oakland's shore power project. Shore power provides grid-based electric power from land to vessels, allowing those vessels to turn off their diesel-fueled auxiliary engines when they are at dock.

Caterpillar Inc. announces yesterday that the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has signed an agreement to purchase 17 generator sets powered by Tier 4 Interim certified Cat® C15 ACERT™ engines as part of an ongoing effort at the Port of Savannah to upgrade older rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTG) with cleaner technology. Atlanta-based Cat dealer Yancey Bros. Co. will adapt the diesel generator sets with customized enclosures and mounts for installation into 17 RTGs.  The project will start in the first quarter of 2011, with staged upgrades scheduled for completion within 12 months.

The Port of Felixstowe has made the annual award of the John Bubb Safety Trophy, won this year for the first time by an operational shift. The trophy is awarded annually to the area with the greatest reduction in accidents over the course of a year.

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. achieved a record result in 2010, with net profit rising 36% to an all-time high of € 310.5 million (2009: € 227.9 million). Revenue growth of 23% to € 2.7 billion represented another new record (2009: € 2.2 billion). This exceptional performance was partly attributable to a very strong operational year as well as the contribution from SMIT Internationale N.V. following the acquisition.

GAC , the world's leading provider of global Shipping, Logistics and Marine services, reports that as fighting continues in Libya, vessels may become increasingly valuable as an escape route over the coming days if access to Benghazi is blocked from the south and east.  However, maritime security concerns have already been raised after at least one regime-controlled commercial vessel was hijacked by opposition forces whilst heading towards either Sirte or Tripoli. Vessels are advised to exercise caution if operating in the area.

At the end of a one-month journey, the CAP PALMERSTON was the first ship in the expanded North America West Coast (WAMS) service operated by Hamburg Süd to reach the Port of Hamburg yesterday. The vessel was handled and cleared at the HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai. The journey through the Panama Canal and on to Europe covered a distance of about 10,000 nautical miles.

Following on a €30 Million investment in a state of the art steel processing hall in 2008/2009 Liebherr has recently completed a €15 million Euro investment in a new purpose built machining hall. The new facility which measures 25.50m. wide and 49.00m. long houses a Colgar FRAL 401 CNC boring and milling machine. The Colgar machine has a travel path of 25,000mm and a vertical axis travel of 5.000mm.  The CAD/CAM integrated state of the art machine means that the largest STS crane parts can be machined in a single set-up with unprecedented precision. 

TTS Port Equipment AB, will supply 10 translifters and 220 cassettes, with delivery commencing February 2011.The equipment will be used to move containers between rail-mounted gantry crane stacks and the on-dock rail at the terminal. The cassette system contains of a combination of translifters and cassettes.

Ron DeFeo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Terex Corporation (NYSE: TEX), has visited the manufacturing operations of the Company's latest crane manufacturing joint venture in China for an event  to celebrate its new partnership.  In late 2010, Terex signed an agreement with the privately held Shandong Topower Heavy Equipment Company for the manufacturing of lattice boom crawler cranes."Our partnership with Topower represents a significant step forward for the Terex Cranes product portfolio and for our presence in the Chinese market," says Mr. DeFeo. "This event provides the opportunity to mark the promising start of our operations and treinforce our goal of successfully combining the worldwide experience of Terex Cranes with the expertise established by Topower in the Chinese market.

Today, the South Carolina State Ports Authority (SCSPA) Board awarded the design work for the new Union Pier passenger terminal to a team led by national firm CH2M Hill, along with local partners LS3P Associates, Collins Engineers, DesignWorks and Thomas & Hutton. The $2.4-million design project for the new terminal will begin this month.  Actual renovation work will also begin this year, with a targeted opening date by the third quarter of 2012.
