The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) continues to make progress in its commitment to innovation and sustainability through its participation in the European RENMARINAS DEMOS project, an initiative aimed at promoting research, development and innovation in the field of marine renewable energy.
The aim of the project is to promote the sustainable use of clean energy sources in the maritime sector, thereby contributing to the decarbonisation and improved energy efficiency of the port sector.

As part of this initiative, Valenciaport has put out to tender the design, supply and installation of two electrical power evacuation systems: one from a floating photovoltaic plant connected to the Port of Valencia’s medium-voltage grid, and another from a wave power plant linked to the Port of Sagunto’s medium-voltage network. The project has a budget of over €1.7 million and a completion period of 11 months.
The RENMARINAS DEMOS project, funded under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan financed by the European Union – Next Generation EU – through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), promotes the development of technologies related to offshore wind, wave, tidal and other renewable energy solutions applied to the maritime environment. In addition to research and technological development, the initiative includes knowledge transfer activities, specialised training, collaboration between companies and research centres, as well as the implementation of demonstration projects under real-world conditions.
With this initiative, Valenciaport continues to consolidate its strategy for energy transition and emissions reduction, in line with its Strategic Plan and with the aim of moving towards a more efficient, resilient and sustainable port model. The incorporation of marine renewable energy reinforces the role of the ports of Valencia and Sagunto as hubs for applied innovation and leaders in sustainability within the European port system.
Net-zero emissions plan
These initiatives are part of the Net Zero Emissions Plan, through which Valenciaport aims to lead the decarbonisation of the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and GandÃa by implementing action plans tailored to each sub-sector of the port community. In this regard, initiatives such as RENMARINAS DEMOS play a significant role.
The initiative therefore involves the development of applied research and technological development projects in the field of marine renewable energy, from conceptualisation through to prototype validation. This may include the study of new technologies, materials, energy storage systems and methods for integration into existing grids. It also aims to foster collaboration between businesses, research centres, universities and public authorities at both national and international levels. The aim is to create synergies and knowledge networks that will drive progress in this field.
