The European MAGPIE project has officially opened a new public exhibition at Portlantis, the interactive experience centre in the port of Rotterdam. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore how ports can accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable, digital and resilient future.

The exhibition presents a selection of MAGPIE’s most tangible and forward-looking innovations, developed in collaboration with partners across Europe. Through real-life objects and scale models, combined with accessible storytelling techniques such as augmented reality, visitors can discover how ports are working on cleaner fuels, smarter logistics, advanced digital tools and low-emission transport solutions. The innovations include an offshore charging solution, a hybrid shunting locomotive and automated truck charging systems.
Europe is facing major challenges related to the energy transition, industrial competitiveness, climate objectives and strategic resilience. In this context, ports are increasingly becoming places where innovation moves from concept to real-world application. MAGPIE was established to support this development. Co-funded by the European Union and coordinated by the Port of Rotterdam, the project brings together 45 partners to develop and demonstrate practical solutions that help European ports become greener and smarter.
The opening of the exhibition at Portlantis marks an important public milestone for the project. It provides a space where the general public, students, professionals and policymakers can engage directly with innovations that are being tested and implemented in the port environment.
Berte Simons, COO of the Port of Rotterdam, contributed to the opening of the exhibition and emphasized the significance of the project: “The logistics industry is undergoing the biggest transitions in decades, and the Port of Rotterdam is at the forefront of driving this change. Together with our MAGPIE partners, we are bringing knowledge and innovation together to accelerate the transition. We are turning plans and pilots into tangible solutions. It is a great achievement of the entire consortium that we can now showcase these innovations at Portlantis for a wider audience.”
The Portlantis exhibition forms part of MAGPIE’s broader efforts to share results, strengthen collaboration between European ports and increase public awareness of the role ports play in building a climate-neutral and future-proof Europe. By presenting these innovations in an accessible public setting, MAGPIE aims not only to demonstrate progress, but also to inspire further cooperation, investment and follow-up action across Europe.
