It's probably the humblest of the heavy cargo-handling machines you'll see in operation at a port terminal. In comparison to more sophisticated straddle carriers, reachstackers and mobile harbour cranes, the forklift truck (FLT) looks almost antiquated. Developments within the market and technological enhancements, however, contradict the ostensibly humdrum functionality of FLTs as Tim Newbound reports...

As in all sectors of port cargo-handling equipment, the forklift truck market suffered a notable downturn because of the global recession. However, companies are beginning to benefit from a recovery in orders.
